An evening to remember for a Father and Son in Blandford
RWBro Richard Merritt, Bros Melvyn and Mervyn Curtis and WBro Graham Smith
On Tuesday 20th July Father and Son Mervyn and Melvyn Curtis were raised to the degree of Master Masons in a historic double ceremony in The Lodge of Honour and Friendship No. 1266 in Blandford. The ceremony was conducted in the presence of more than 60 members and visitors, which included The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master Richard Merrit, by the Worshipful Master of Honour and Friendship, Worshipful Brother Graham Smith.

Mervyn Curtis was made a Mason in September 2008 and Melvyn in January 2009. With the prior consent of The Provincial Grand Master, the opportunity was taken by the Lodge to afford Brothers Mervyn and Melvyn an experience that few fathers and sons can ever have shared, a momentous evening for both that will stay in their hearts as a special bond between them for the rest of their days. Whilst the double ceremony did make for rather a long evening, it was a truly uplifting occasion that will live long in the memory of all that witnessed it.

Zetland Court Summer Fete
Zetland Court, an RMBI homeOn the first Saturday in June over 400 Brethren, their families and members of the public attended the 2010 Zetland Court Summer Fete organised by the Association of Friends of Zetland Court.  Lodges from the Province of Dorset, together with some from the neighbouring Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight, manned a wide variety of stalls ranging from pig racing, plants, hoopla, burgers, pictures, golfing, books, skittles, bric-a-brac and the ever-popular beer tent.  The area serving fresh Dorset strawberry cream teas with home-made cakes, to the accompaniment of music from WBro Maurice Ross and his trio, remained busy throughout the afternoon. Elsewhere in the fete, visitors enjoyed burgers and beer, wine and other delights in glorious sunshine and were entertained by a live jazz band.  Children were kept amused by a range of entertainers including a Punch and Judy show.

RWBro Richard Merritt, Provincial Grand Master for Dorset, and Mrs Vicki Merritt made the draw of the winning ticket for a substantial cash prize; overall around £14,000 was taken for the benefit of residents of Zetland Court which will provide a range of facilities including transport, a music centre, Wii games and new furnishings.

Zetland Court provides care for 63 residents, and last year the RMBI granted approximately £4 million for care and assistance to older Freemasons and their dependants who could not otherwise afford to meet the cost of their care.

Dorset Masonic Knowledge Quiz
Brethren from the St. Aldhelm’s Lodge No. 2559 are the most knowledgeable Masonically – and that's official!

Dorset Masonic Knowledge QuizThe Final of the Dorset Provincial Masonic Knowledge Quiz was impressively won by the team from 2559 who led the way throughout the quiz and won the contest with an impressive three points lead over their rivals, the Lodge of Benevolence No. 1168, the latter holding the record for having competed in the Final every year since the Quiz was launched in 2007.  Teams from the Lodge of Amity No. 137 and Vindelis Lodge No. 7860, tied for a close third place to provide an interesting and entertaining evening to a Lodge crowded with supporters.  Having won the Quiz last year, Brethren from De Moulham Lodge proved first-class hosts for this year’s Final which was enjoyed by all who attended, and such was the popularity of the Quiz that twelve Grand Officers were amongst the supporters.

During the presentation ceremony, the Provincial Grand Master for Dorset, RWBro Richard Merritt, congratulated all teams on their splendid performance and was delighted to note that the Quiz was increasing in popularity and encouraging enthusiasm for Masonic knowledge and visiting other Lodges.  The Provincial Grand Master invited the Past Provincial Grand Master for Dorset, RWBro Harry Barnes, to present the coveted Barnes Masonic Knowledge Trophy to the winning team – which, by coincidence, just happened to be the Lodge of which the Provincial Grand Master is a member!
